What are TM65s & EPDs

Sustainability is a core part of how projects are designed, specified, and delivered across the built environment. Whether you’re working on a refurbishment, a major rollout, or a new‑build project, customers increasingly want - and expect - transparent environmental data about the products going into their buildings. At Excel, we’re committed to making that easier for you. Two important tools include the TM65 calculations and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Both provide valuable insight into a product’s lifecycle impact, helping installation partners make informed, responsible choices.
Not all products have full lifecycle datasets available, especially in structured cabling where components can be complex and varied. That’s where TM65 comes in. Developed by CIBSE, TM65 is a recognised methodology for estimating the embodied carbon of a product when complete environmental data isn’t yet available. It gives manufacturers and installers a structured way to calculate the carbon impact linked to:
Raw material extraction
Manufacturing processes
Transportation
Installation
Maintenance or potential replacement
End of life processing
For cabling infrastructure - where traditional EPDs may not always exist - TM65 provides a credible, consistent way to quantify environmental impact.
TM65 helps you:
Understand the carbon footprint behind the products you’re installing
Support customers with sustainability reporting and ESG commitments
Meet the expectations of green building schemes
Compare options based on environmental performance
Make better procurement choices on complex projects
We have TM65 certificates for every Excel product in the range to provide full transparency. You can download the TM65 certificate for each product from the online catalogue under ‘Datasheets & Docs’ for each of the products.
If TM65 offers an estimate, EPDs go one step further. An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a third‑party verified, standardised document that summarises a product’s environmental impact across its full lifecycle. They follow strict international standards including ISO 14025 and EN 15804, ensuring global recognition and consistency. An EPD typically reports on:
Raw material use
Manufacturing processes
Transportation
Installation impacts
Operational performance
End of life scenarios
Total lifecycle carbon footprint
EPDs support:
BREEAM, LEED, and other sustainability certifications
Responsible procurement frameworks
Transparent comparison between competing products
More accurate whole building lifecycle assessments
Clear, independent verification of a product’s sustainability credentials
Excel has developed EPDs for selected product families as part of our long‑term commitment to lifecycle transparency. If an EPD is available for a product, you’ll find it in the ‘Datasheets & Docs’ section - or you can download them directly here:https://excel-networking.com/downloads/environmental-product-declaration
TM65 and EPDs are part of Excel’s wider programme to deliver environmental transparency and help partners reduce the embodied carbon of their network designs. By adopting these frameworks, we’re helping you:
Build more sustainable, future ready infrastructure
Meet customer, regulatory, and certification requirements
Make informed product choices backed by verified data
Demonstrate measurable environmental progress
This work sits alongside our broader sustainability initiatives - from plastic free packaging, recyclable packaging and responsible sourcing to our ISO 14001 environmental management accreditation.
